Begin the mandatory 41-day Vratham (penance) before the pilgrimage. This includes celibacy, sleeping on the floor, eating only vegetarian sattvic food, two daily prayers, wearing black/blue clothes, and abstaining from alcohol and non-veg. Visit a Guruswami to tie the Irumudi.
Travel to Pampa (the base camp) by bus or car. Take a holy dip in the Pampa River. Begin the 5 km trek through dense forest to Sannidhanam. The route passes through Neelimala and Appachimedu viewpoints.
Reach the Pathinettam Padi (18 golden steps) — only those carrying the Irumudi can ascend these steps. Break the ghee-filled coconut at the designated spot before climbing. Each step represents a spiritual milestone.
Enter the sanctum for darshan of Lord Ayyappa seated in the Yogapattasana posture with the Chinmudra. Pour the ghee from your Irumudi coconut on the deity (Nei Abhishekam). The darshan is brief but intensely spiritual.
If visiting during Makara Sankranti (Jan 14), witness the divine Makaravilakku — a celestial light on the Ponnambalamedu hill. Collect Aravana prasadam and descend back to Pampa. Take another dip in the Pampa River to complete the pilgrimage.
