Water is amazing because it can be SO many things! It falls as splashy rain. It rushes along in a river. It freezes into slippery ice you can slide on. It even puffs into steam from a hot cup of chai. Rain, ice, steam - they look totally different… but they're all the same thing: water!
Hindus believe the whole universe works a little like that. Behind everything - the stars, the animals, the trees, and you - there's one giant, invisible wonder. It isn't a boy or a girl. Its name is Brahman. And here's the fun part: Brahman is so big and so amazing that no single picture could ever show all of it. So people imagine it in lots of different forms - a strong god, a gentle goddess, a playful friend. They're like different faces (or different costumes!) of the very same Brahman.

Hindus say a tiny spark of that same wonder lives inside you. They call it your Atman - the real "you," deep down inside. So the next person you meet? There's a little bit of the same wonderful something glowing inside them, too.
There's no single "right" way to picture God in Hinduism. Some people imagine one God. Some imagine many. Some feel God in everything - in rivers, in mountains, in the morning sky. And guess what? All of those are okay.
Think about a sandcastle, a song, or a garden. First it gets made. Then for a while, someone looks after it. And one day it ends - so something brand new can begin. Hindus picture these three big jobs of the whole universe as three great gods.
Brahma is the Maker - he creates the world. Vishnu is the Protector - he keeps it safe. And Shiva is the Changer - he clears the old away so the new can grow. Together these three are called the Trimurti, which means "three forms." Like a team, they keep the whole universe balanced and turning.
They're not fighting each other. An old book says the three gods "exist through each other" and "never abandon one another" - best teammates forever! And remember Brahman, the one big wonder behind everything? These three are all faces of that very same Brahman.
This "three big gods" idea isn't as old as you might think - it grew up later in Hindu history, long after the very first Hindu hymns were sung.
Hindus don't only love gods - they love the great Goddess too! Her name is Devi. Some Hindus believe she is the greatest power of all, and that it's her energy that gives strength even to the big gods like Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Wow!
Devi appears in many shapes. As Saraswati, she's the goddess of learning, music, and art - the perfect helper for homework and songs! As Lakshmi, she brings good fortune, riches, and happy, good things. And as Durga, she becomes a brave warrior-mother.
Durga is famous for being fearless. She rides a lion (sometimes a tiger!), has many arms - each holding a weapon - and once defeated a scary buffalo-demon called Mahishasura. She stands for courage, strength, and protecting people from harm.
Durga is celebrated for nine whole nights during a festival called Navaratri, when nine different forms of the Goddess are honoured over nine days.
Imagine that whenever the world got into real trouble, the protector god Vishnu came down to earth - not from far away, but living right here as a hero you could actually meet. Hindus believe he does exactly that! Each time, he arrives in a new form called an avatar, which means "coming down."
Rama is one of the most loved avatars. He's known as the "ideal person" - someone who always tries to do the right thing, even when it's hard. He's the brave hero of a famous, exciting story called the Ramayana.
Krishna is another beloved avatar - a wise friend who once taught a worried warrior named Arjuna how to be brave and do his duty. But Krishna was also a super-playful kid: he loved stealing butter so much that everyone nicknamed him "Makhan Chor" - the Butter Thief!
Vishnu is said to have ten main avatars - and some of them aren't human at all! There's a giant fish, a huge turtle, and even a mighty lion-man.
Picture a god with the head of an elephant and a big, round, happy belly. That's Ganesha - and everybody adores him! Whenever Hindus start something new - a trip, the first day of school, even a wedding - they say hello to Ganesha first. Why? Because he's the "remover of obstacles" - the one who clears the bumps and problems out of your path so things go smoothly. He's super clever, too: he's the helper of writing, art, and learning.
Look closely - one of his tusks is broken! There's a famous story that a wise poet needed someone to write down a HUGE, super-long tale called the Mahabharata. Ganesha jumped in: "I'll do it!" - and used his own broken tusk as a pen. Now that's a helper who doesn't give up! (Oh, and Ganesha loves sweets - he's often shown holding a bowl of yummy treats called modak. Yum!)
Hanuman is a mighty monkey hero - brave, incredibly strong, and the most loyal friend you could ever imagine. He loves and serves a prince named Rama with his whole heart. In one famous adventure, Rama's wife Sita was carried far away to an island called Lanka. Who on earth could reach her? Hanuman grew as big as a mountain and flew right across the sea to find her!
Hanuman never gives up - and he never asks for a reward. He helps just because he loves to. That's why people think of him whenever they need a little extra courage.
