Guru Nanak drew from both Hindu and Islamic wisdom. The Sufi-Bhakti connections produced some of India's most beautiful poetry. Kerala's Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities have lived alongside Hindus for centuries. Ramakrishna practised Christianity and Islam to demonstrate their validity firsthand. This isn't perfect history — conflicts happened too — but the aspiration toward harmony is deeply rooted.

Vivekananda's Chicago Legacy

When Swami Vivekananda addressed the Parliament of World's Religions in 1893 Chicago, he didn't just introduce Hinduism to the West — he articulated a vision of interfaith harmony that still echoes today. His message was simple: all religions are true, religious conflict is born of ignorance, and the goal isn't to convert each other but to help each person become the best version of their own tradition. This speech is often called the birth of the modern interfaith movement.

Practical Interfaith Living

For modern Hindus, interfaith engagement means several things: attending friends' religious celebrations with genuine interest, explaining Hindu concepts without defensiveness, standing up against bigotry toward any religion, finding common ground in shared values (compassion, service, truth), and maintaining pride in one's own tradition without claiming superiority. The strongest interfaith bridge is built not by those who are uncertain about their own faith, but by those who are deeply rooted in it.
