Planetary Remedies: Stones, Mantras & Donations

Got a weak Jupiter? Saturn causing trouble? Rahu making life unpredictable? Vedic astrology doesn't just diagnose planetary problems - it prescribes remedies. For thousands of years, Hindus have used gemstones, mantras, specific charitable acts, and puja rituals to balance planetary energies in their horoscopes. Now, whether these remedies "work" is a matter of personal faith and experience. But the system itself is remarkably detailed and internally consistent. Here's how it all works.

Gemstone Therapy (Ratna)

Each planet has a corresponding gemstone that's believed to amplify its positive energy: Ruby for Sun, Pearl for Moon, Red Coral for Mars, Emerald for Mercury, Yellow Sapphire for Jupiter, Diamond for Venus, Blue Sapphire for Saturn, Hessonite for Rahu, and Cat's Eye for Ketu. Gemstones must be natural, untreated, of minimum quality, and set in specific metals (usually gold or silver) on specific fingers. A critically important caveat: wearing the wrong gemstone or one for a malefic planet can make things worse. Always consult a knowledgeable astrologer before wearing any astrological gemstone.

Mantra Power

Each planet has seed mantras (beej mantras) and longer Vedic hymns. The Navagraha Stotra addresses all nine planets. Individual mantras include "Om Suryaya Namah" (Sun), "Om Chandraya Namah" (Moon), and the powerful Shani mantra for Saturn. These are typically chanted a specific number of times (108 or multiples) on the planet's day (Saturday for Shani, Tuesday for Mars, etc.). Regular mantra practice is considered the most accessible and effective planetary remedy - it costs nothing and can be done by anyone.

Charitable Remedies (Daan)

Donating specific items on specific days is a widely practised remedy. For Sun problems: donate wheat, jaggery, or copper on Sundays. For Moon: rice, white cloth, or silver on Mondays. For Saturn: black sesame, mustard oil, or iron items on Saturdays. For Rahu: coconut, blue cloth, or blankets. The idea is that giving away items associated with a planet reduces its malefic grip on you. It's karmic rebalancing through generosity - and regardless of astrological beliefs, regular charity is always beneficial.

Fasting & Puja

Fasting on a planet's day is another common remedy: Mondays for Moon, Tuesdays for Mars/Hanuman, Thursdays for Jupiter/Vishnu, Saturdays for Saturn. Specific puja rituals like Navagraha Shanti Puja, Shani Puja, or Rahu-Ketu Puja are performed by priests using Vedic mantras and specific offerings. Visiting the Navagraha temples near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu is considered the ultimate remedy. Many people also plant or worship the tree associated with each planet for long-term benefit.
