Walk into a South Indian temple and look up. The ceilings might be covered with paintings of gods, celestial beings, and mythological scenes — painted directly onto stone, hundreds of years ago. Indian temple painting is one of the oldest continuous art traditions on the planet. Madhubani painting comes from the Mithila region of Bihar and has been practiced by women for centuries. Originally drawn on mud walls of homes during festivals and weddings, it uses natural dyes and pigments in striking geometric and figurative patterns. Themes include the Ramayana, Krishna's life, nature scenes, and wedding ceremonies. What makes Madhubani special is that it was never "court art" — it was always the art of ordinary women, handed down from mother to daughter. It is democratic, vibrant, and alive.

Ajanta and the Oldest Traditions

The cave paintings at Ajanta (2nd century BCE to 5th century CE) are among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian painting. While primarily Buddhist, they show the technical mastery that Indian painters had achieved — natural pigments, sophisticated shading, emotional expressions, and complex compositions. This tradition influenced all subsequent Hindu temple painting. The Chola-period paintings at Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur show a direct lineage from Ajanta's techniques.

India's painting diversity is staggering. Pattachitra from Odisha uses cloth scrolls with mythological narratives in intricate detail.
