Holi, the Festival of Colors, is one of the most vibrant and joyous celebrations in the Hindu calendar. Celebrated on the full moon day of Phalguna (February-March), Holi marks the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. It is a festival that transcends religious boundaries, uniting people of all backgrounds in a riot of colors, music, dance, and camaraderie.
The festival has deep mythological roots. The most well-known legend is that of Prahlad and Holika. Young prince Prahlad, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, was persecuted by his demon father Hiranyakashipu. The demoness Holika, who had a boon of fire immunity, sat with Prahlad on a burning pyre to kill him. However, through divine grace, Prahlad emerged unscathed while Holika perished - symbolizing the victory of devotion over demonic forces. This event is commemorated on the eve of Holi through Holika Dahan, a ritual bonfire.
Holi celebrations vary beautifully across India. In Mathura and Vrindavan, the birthplace and playground of Lord Krishna, Holi is celebrated for over a week with Lathmar Holi (where women playfully beat men with sticks) and flower Holi at the Banke Bihari Temple. In Shantiniketan, it is celebrated as Basanta Utsav with cultural programs. In Punjab, Hola Mohalla features martial arts displays by Sikh warriors.
The day after Holika Dahan is Rangwali Holi or Dhulandi, when people smear each other with colored powders (gulal) and drench each other with colored water using pichkaris (water guns) and water balloons. Traditional sweets like gujiya, thandai (often infused with bhang), and puran poli are shared among families and neighbors, making it a true feast for the senses.
